After the blues influence acoustic sounds of Heartbreak Station came Cinderella's new album Still Climbing.The release was at a time when grunge bands was starting to take its toll in the marketplace. Most record companies including their own Mercury seemed to be pushing the grunge sound more and more.Promotion of the album got little attention or no exposure at all. I myself had no idea of the album release until a few years ago.But with the changing of the times eventually every legitimate band of the 80's started to fade away from the scene. The album itself still shows Tom Keifer's talented skills and ability to write great songs.He writes about life in general and the truth of life as he sees it.The album's "sound" without question was a combination of all their pass albums put into one.... which was Cinderella. One of the best ballad tracks "Hard To Find The Words" was a dedication to his mother,who passed away just a short while before the release of Still Climbing.

Out of all the hair/glam bands to primp and pose on a stage during that late 80's fad, Cinderella is perhaps of the few I can still look back on with a modicum of respect.They shed off a lot of their pretentions by this, their third full length album, and settled into a very decent style that was uniquely their own. Mixing their original glam-ish AC/DC based rock with a touch of the Rolling Stones and Delta Blues, this entire album just reeks of swamp and good ol' boys sitting on the back porch writing songs about their women and how they broke hearts. Tom Keifer, who can give Brian Johnson a run for his money in that shrill octave breaking voice, tempers some of his singing with an actual singing tone, especially on "Dead Man's Road". Interestingly, Keifer adds a lot of horns, gospel back-up vocals, and other instrumentation that was totally foreign to the dying glam scene at the time. Overall, this is one of the best albums that showed the true talent of the group.If I was to choose one album from Cinderella's list,this is the one I would choose. 1. The More Things Change 2. Cinderella's Album "Long Cold Winter"

Regardless of the atrocious frilly outfits, mile high hair and overall glammy image, Cinderella was definitely a step ahead of the game back in the 80s hairspray pile. Long Cold Winter was a huge improvement from their 1986 debut, Night Songs, and one of the better rock albums to come out in 1988. Cinderella took a much more steady road in terms of songwriting, mixing a bit of the blues, AC/DC vocals and plain ol' fashioned rock.

The songs just oozed with catchiness and was the sort of thing that was made for riding down the open road with the windows down. "Gypsy Road", "Second Wind" and "Fire and Ice" are all the stuff that fist pumping rock arena dreams are made of. But on the flipside, Cinderella could also pull on the heart strings with soulful ballads such as "Don't Know What You Got (Till It's Gone)" .The title track is a haunting, organ filled number that proved the band had a little more depth than some of their fast car driving contemporaries. Long Cold Winter is certainly one of the best albums to survive the glam overdose of the 80s and something I like to still put on to wax nostalgic about those long gone days.

The next album to follow "Heartbreak Station" is one of my personal favorites of all time if not the Best.This album explores alot of territory of different music styles.The music is real, the songwriting is of a very high level, and the album speaks for itself once you've heard it.

Cinderella burst on to the music scene in 1986 with Night Songs. They had been discovered by Bon Jovi and they have a similar "light metal" sound. While Bon Jovi had his moments, Cinderella was a more consistent band which appealed to an audience used to listening to standard hard-rock. Night Songs may not be the best album in their catalog, but it does have a certain charm and includes many of the bands better known songs. Many debut albums normally have one song that propels the band on to greatness and multi-album deals but the rest of the album normally falls flat. That isn't really the case here fortunately. Cinderella knew what they were doing on the road and in the studio and they really let it all hang out here.

Tom Keifer Cinderella's Front Man

Rolling Stone Magazine calls Tom Keifer "a gritty, bluesy, (rocker) with enough genuine swagger to draw comparisons to Mick Jagger." The Rolling Stones celebrated the Delta Blues in their songs and sound by citing players like Ry Cooder, Leadbelly, Howlin' Wolf, Muddy Waters, and Willie Dixon among others as a derivative 25 years prior. Tom Keifer and his band Cinderella re-injected that influence into mainstream Rock n' Roll when they burst onto the hard rock scene in 1986. Where most of Keifer's hard rock/pop metal contemporaries had grown up on a third-generation of Rock n' Roll (with its implied blues influences), Tom preferred from a young age to dig back into the core of the Delta Blues sound, that had first given birth to Rock n' Roll's infancy.

Quickly carving out a niche as a revivalist blues-rock singer/songwriter with Cinderella's debut album, Night Songs, which spawned the hits 'Nobody’s Fool', 'Shake Me', and 'Somebody Save Me', Tom Keifer and Co. set out on a whirlwind path of success that would stay remarkably disciplined both in terms of Keifer's musical focus and the band's influence over the decade's sound. Perhaps this focus is part of what made Cinderella stand apart musically from the band's generational rock counterparts. The emotional sophistication of Tom's songs on the band's next album, the iconic Long Cold Winter would take the hard rock genre as fans knew it even deeper into the bohemian psyche of the traveling musician than it had gone before within the context of that generation. Long Cold Winter, released in 1988, was a truly penetrating narration, journeying into the highs and hells of life on the road from the eyes of one of hard rock's last real gypsies. Written by Keifer almost entirely on the road during the Night Songs tour, all of the album's hits, including 'Don't Know What You Got Till Its Gone', 'Gypsy Road', and 'Coming Home' offered listeners an authentic insight and appreciation for the hardships of life on the road that hadn't been so brilliantly captured in song since the days of Bob Seger's 'Turn the Page'and Willie Nelson's 'On the Road Again'. Rolling Stone Magazine declared boldly in a review of the record that "Long Cold Winter is indeed a radical departure from the no-frills crotch-rock mentality of Night Songs, Cinderella's 1986 debut. As for the variety it offers, this album leaves its predecessor in the dust... It...teems with feisty moments, and...exhibits an admirable willingness by Cinderella to take a stab at something different...The top-notch musicianship and streetwise savvy displayed on the album...make Cinderella a force to be reckoned with." The band's third and perhaps most accomplished album, Heartbreak Station was immediately recognized for its achievement, both in terms of the authenticity of songs and sound, and as a true masterpiece that could stand up among rocks finest records. Heartbreak Station made Cinderella a permanent member of rocks elite, particularly via the moving hit 'Heartbreak Station', which bore a soul-stirring and authentic resemblance to Robert Johnson's 'Love in Vain' in terms of the desolating essence it captured. According to AllMusicGuide.com, with this record, Cinderella "created a sneering, raunchy hard-rock album that was artistically their finest moment...Heartbreak Station shows that Cinderella has more genuine rock & roll grit than most of the metal bands of the late '80s."

Meanwhile, Rolling Stone Magazine gave Tom Keifer perhaps his greatest critical compliment by acknowledging him for the musician and songwriter he had truly become, remarking that "Heartbreak Station is amazingly likable and even brave: You'd have to search pretty far to find white blues this consistently catchy and rhythmic, this varied, (and) this free of gut-busting macho slop...Heartbreak Station could prove the most inescapable hard rock since Appetite for Destruction." HeartBreak Station wasn't just a celebration of Keifer's songwriting achievement, but also a nod to Cinderella's members in how far they had come as a band in terms of musicianship. Rolling Stone Magazine commented to that effect in their review of the album, remarking specifically that they rose to the musical challenge of Keifer's material by authentically "tempering their shriller tendencies with strings, saxes, logrolling bottleneck blues, whorehouse piano, trashy tambourines and what sounds like a jew's-harp, Keifer's backup boys replicate Big Brother and the Holding Company's crunch, pausing for pit stops in the neighborhoods of not just Bad Company, Humble Pie and Led Zep but of the Allmans, James Brown and even the Flying Burrito Brothers." By 1991, Tom Keifer's songs and Cinderella's sound had captured the hearts of millions of rock fans around the world, (14 million to be exact in terms of records sold,) and had already achieved a legacy and place in Rock n' Roll as perhaps the only truly authentic hard rock blues band of the 1980s. Riding high on the success of Heartbreak Station, a sudden twist of fate marked the beginning of a tragic period in Tom's life, both professionally and personally. What was supposed to begin as a break between the band's US and Japanese legs of the 1991 Heartbreak Station tour, on a routine day, as Tom sat down in his home studio to record, he found he simply couldn't sing. Even more frightening than the silence within his own voice was that of the doctors he saw who couldn't give him any explanation for the loss of his voice! The only answer Keifer got was a statement of the obvious, that it just went away. Finally Tom found a specialist in Philadelphia who explained he had a paresis of the laryngeal nerve controlling his left vocal cord. In addition to undergoing a pair of delicate vocal surgeries to remove a cyst and repair a hemorrhage, the bulk of Tom's recovery in correcting the vocal paralysis came via vocal therapy wherein Keifer had to literally learn to sing all over again. Retraining his voice by working with a speech therapist and vocal coach, Keifer, after a 12 year battle, has finally attained the victory of a full recovery that has left him singing better than ever! In addition to Tom Keifer's battle with his own vocal cords, he also lost his mother during this time period in the early 1990s. These tragedies informed the songs on the band's fourth album, Still Climbing, released by Polygram in 1994. While the record sold well among the band's fan base, it lacked the label support due to a shift in rock trends from pop metal to Grunge, denying it the opportunity to truly achieve what Cinderella's past albums had commercially and quietly opened the door for Keifer to begin focusing on his solo career. While Tom was personally battling the paresis of his vocal cords, the band's breakup in 1995 was a welcome change for the musician personally. Hard rock band Cinderella gained success in the mid-'80s, turning out a series of million-selling albums and hit singles while placing music videos in heavy rotation on MTV. By the mid-'90s, the group's mass popularity had subsided due to professional setbacks and perceived changes in taste. But they continued to tour regularly well into the 21st century. Cinderella was founded in Philadelphia, PA, in 1983 by singer/songwriter/guitarist/keyboardist Tom Keifer (born January 26, 1961) and bassist Eric Brittingham (born May 8, 1960), who quickly added lead guitarist Jeff LaBar (born March 18, 1963). Guitarist Michael Kelly Smith and drummer Tony Destra were also early members of the band, but they left in 1985 to form Britny Fox. Cinderella then added drummer Jody Cortez and continued as a four-piece. Insisting on playing original material, they performed in clubs and bars in Pennsylvania and New Jersey, and in 1985 Jon Bon Jovi caught one of their shows. He was sufficiently impressed to alert his record company, Mercury, which signed the band. Their debut album, Night Songs, was released in June 1986. Shortly after its completion, Cortez left the band and was replaced by Fred Coury (born October 20, 1964). The LP was not an immediate success, but it gained momentum gradually while the band toured extensively as an opening act to promote it. It broke into the Billboard chart in July, and the track "Shake Me," although it failed to chart as a single, got enough radio attention to turn up on Billboard's Album Rock Tracks chart in August. On October 1, the album was certified gold. That month, Mercury released a second single, "Nobody's Fool," accompanied by a music video that earned play on MTV; it broke into the charts in November and peaked at number 13 in February 1987. Its success further stimulated sales of the album, which was certified platinum in December 1986 and broke into the Top Ten by the end of the year; it peaked at number 3 in February 1987, and that same month was certified double platinum. In April, Mercury released a third single, "Somebody Save Me," which peaked at number 66 in May. (The album was certified triple platinum in May 1991.) Having broken through to popular success with Night Songs, Cinderella returned with their second album, Long Cold Winter, in July 1988. Radio initially focused on the track "Gypsy Road," giving it a Top 20 ranking in the Album Rock Tracks chart, but Mercury did not release it as a single at first (although in the U.K., where it was released as a single, it charted). Instead the power ballad "Don't Know What You Got (Till It's Gone)" was released as a single in August, and it peaked at number 12 in November. The album reached number ten in September, the same month it was certified gold and platinum simultaneously, with a double-platinum certification following in November. (It was certified triple platinum in January 1997.) As the group continued to tour relentlessly through 1988 and 1989, Mercury broke more singles from the LP. "The Last Mile," released in December, peaked at number 36 in March 1989; "Coming Home," released in March, hit number 20 in June; and "Gypsy Road," finally put on 45 a year after the release of Long Cold Winter in July 1989, and backed by a live version of the Rolling Stones' "Jumpin' Jack Flash," got to number 51 in September. Again, Cinderella came off the road and spent a year crafting its third album, Heartbreak Station, which appeared in November 1990. Although it was a hit out of the box, going gold in January 1991 and platinum in February, the album encountered more resistance than the band's previous efforts, peaking at number 19, with no multi-platinum certifications forthcoming. Leadoff single "Shelter Me" peaked at number 36 in February, and the title song reached number 44 in April. More disturbing than this mild commercial disappointment, however, were problems within the band. Coury departed, and Cinderella initially replaced him with Kevin Valentine, then hired noted session drummer Kenny Aronoff temporarily before bringing in Kevin Conway. Then, after the U.S. leg of the Heartbreak Station tour had ended and the band was gearing up to go to Japan in 1991, Keifer woke up one morning and found he couldn't sing. Doctors initially were unable to figure out what was wrong, but a specialist finally diagnosed paresis of the laryngeal nerve controlling the left vocal cord. Keifer was forced to undergo two throat operations, followed by extensive therapy. Cinderella managed to put a track, "Hot and Bothered," on the chart-topping Wayne's World soundtrack, released in February 1992, but otherwise the band was out of commission for an extended period of time. In the meanwhile, fashions changed. Cinderella had been part of a "pop-metal" movement including Bon Jovi, Great White, and Ratt, who preceded them, as well as Poison, the enormously popular Guns N' Roses, and L.A. Guns, who followed them. But when "grunge" rockers Nirvana, boasting a neo-punk style, broke through to success in the fall of 1991 with their album Nevermind and single "Smells Like Teen Spirit," the record labels suddenly became enamored of their stripped-down approach. Suddenly, instead of the teased and blown-dry coiffures and skin-tight stage costumes of the pop-metal bands, it was the dirty-hair-falling-in-the-face, flannel-shirt-and-jeans look of Nirvana frontman Kurt Cobain that was all the rage. Soon, the pop-metal groups were written off with a new epithet, dismissed as "hair metal" bands. By the time Keifer & Co. finally emerged with the fourth Cinderella album, Still Climbing, in November 1994, it could only manage to spend one week at number 178 before disappearing. Mercury promptly dropped the band.

Cinderella's touring opportunities also dried up, and while the group did not formally disband in 1995, it became inactive for lack of offers. Keifer moved to Nashville in 1997 and worked on his songwriting, eventually getting cuts on albums by Andy Griggs and Lynyrd Skynyrd. By 1998, there was enough interest by promoters for Cinderella to reunite (with Coury rejoining) for a tour. On October 2 and 3, they appeared at the Key Club in Hollywood, CA, and recorded the show for an album, Live at the Key Club, released on Cleopatra's Dead Line label in July 1999. Unfortunately, the disc was also licensed out to other labels over the years and has confused consumers by also appearing under the titles In Concert and Live From the Gypsy Road. Meanwhile, Cinderella had been signed to Sony's Portrait label by famed record executive John David Kalodner, who was also signing other hard rock bands of the '80s. But initial Portrait releases were not successful, and Cinderella's contract was canceled. Nevertheless, a faithful fan base supported continuing road work by the band, which reunited in the summer of 2000 for a tour with Poison, followed by a second outing by the two groups in 2002.
